John Krapohl

Graduate Student, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (BMMB)

John grew up in Blythewood, South Carolina. In 2020 he got his B.S in Molecular Biology at Brigham Young University, where he also got his M.S. in Microbiology and Molecular Biology in 2022. During his undergraduate he worked in the lab of Marc Hansen, where he worked on several projects involving investigating small molecule agonists as potential therapeutics. He then branched out to learning bioinformatic skills in the lab of Brett Pickett, where he worked on studying the transcriptional perturbations caused by Hantavirus infection of human tissues. He joined the BMMB program at Penn State University in 2022 and was drawn to the Szpara lab because of the unique combination of wet lab and computational research and the interesting questions being tackled. His current research involves studying how HSV-1 evolves in the context of different tissues/cultures.
